Raw Potato Handling and Storage Process Line
Product Information
Potato chips (often just chips), or crisps, are thin slices of potato that have been deep-fried or baked until crunchy. They are commonly served as a snack, side dish, or appetizer. The basic chips are cooked and salted; additional varieties are manufactured using various flavourings and ingredients including herbs, spices, cheeses, other natural flavours, artificial flavours, and additives.
Customer Requirement
The customer started a new plant in Indore, hence for the first start-up of the plant, only one potato chip processing line was ready for production (PC42) with 6 ton/hr infeed raw potato capacity. For future expansion toward the second line, the customer required the total storage of raw potatoes to be around 200 tons, therefore for the raw potato storage and handling line for one chip line, we suggested 6 storage silos with 97.5 tons of storage capacity and the same is to be prepared for future expansion of 195 tons storage capacity.
Challenge
For the first time in India, we were installing such a big silo structure, it was difficult to work on silos at a height of 8 meters.
Working with the newly appointed service team, training, and taking care of their safety.
We had set the target to finish the whole installation work within 7-10 days, and we did it with the help of the EMVE engineer’s excellence.
First, we started with segregating all loose material of all different types of equipment on position, next we started with the first silo structure, and it was really difficult to hang the whole structure with the help of a crane and balance it and place it on the position as per drawing.
We then assembled the 6 silos structures inline.
After the structure work was done, we did the silo bag assembly, silo feeding conveyor on rail assembly on top of silos, platforms assembly, and 13m long feeding elevator.
Lastly, to end the whole raw potato handling and storage line, we assembled a total of 36 pieces of equipment.
Solution
As per requirement, we have given the following equipment with special work principles.
Potato bags unloading conveyor.
Soil extraction conveyor.
Belt-type grader to sort undersized (40mm) potatoes.
Box filler.
Box turner with silo.
Storage silo system with a total capacity of 97.5 Ton.
Continuous individual silo discharge with common collection conveyor.
Weighing conveyor to know per hour and total capacity to further processing line.
Outcome
Due to the above solutions given, we got storage of 97.5 tons of raw graded potatoes in 6 Silo Bags with an individual discharge conveyor system to feed continuously into the potato chips processing line with 6 ton/hr capacity.
